Rimini's 15 kilometres of beach have always been a workshop for ali the latest novelties, and they never cease to surprise. It may ali have started with bowls, but by now the space between promenade and parasols has grown big enough to hold every imaginable kind of beach sport, meaning everything possible that can be played on sand, from a traditional locai game now upgraded to 'beach tennis' through to the latest craze imported from Brazil, 'foot volley', an exhilarating cross between volleyball and five-a-side soccer. Even more popular is beach volleyball, as demonstrated by the crowds of young and not so young people who pack the stands of the arena erected on the beach near Piazzale Boscovich for the Rimini Master leg of the Italian national championships. Basketball enthusiasts are also catered for with over 50 courts on the beach. There are two outposts of Hawaii for lovers of kite-surfing, boards towed by kites proving to be a strong attraction at beach centres 28 and 86. Beach centre 86 also offers courses led by officiai instructors of the Italian kite-surfing association, with use of kites, boards, wetsuit and ali other accessories included . From north to south there are a host of open-air fitness centres with benches for weightlifting and bodybuilding machines. There are also dozens of beach centres that organize courses of gymnastics and exercise with aquagym, music and games, with dance classes and entertainment after sundown to liven up evenings right through the summer. So it's no mere coincidence that Rimini has been elected the capital of the fitness world, when every year in June the city is invaded by some 400,000 visitors for the not-to-be-missed 'Festival of Fitness', a major event at an intemational level that further enhances the busy programme of events that attracts sport lovers from Aprii to October. Another of these events is the 'Paganello' Ultimate Frisbee intemational toumament wich has been held every Easter for several years, with the participation of thousands of frisbee fans from 25 different countries, transforming Rimini's beach into an incredible global beach party. Then there's 'BluRimini', another world-level event, this time dedicated to sailing and other watersports, which takes place in May and June in the waters off Rimini's new marina. Sailing courses with 'BluRimini' dinghies are also offered by 'BluSea' throughout the year, with the possibility of taking part in races as well . Later in the year there are duathlon and triathlon championships, and the 'Roller Festival', three very important events held in September and October (info from the City Council's Sports Department, . The place to go for golf devotees is Rimini Golf Club in Via Tenuta Amalia at Villa Verucchio , with its 18-hole and 7-hole (executive) courses and its Golf Academy, an international golf school where learners can use the most advanced practice facilities available.
